∙ 13y agoUFO as a term means only Unidentified Flying Object, so in the broadest term a "UFO" was a phenomenon that dated back to the times of man's earliest days when he looked up at the moon and said, "I wonder what that is."
"Flying Saucers" were first reported by pilot Kenneth Arnold on June 24th, 1947. The craft described by him are generally accepted as the first mainstream recognition of what we call the UFO phenomenon today. In 1947 the origin of the craft, while mysterious wasn't always directly attributed to visiting aliens. In fact, most contemporary Science Fiction depictions of alien visitors of the era included visions of more traditional looking rockets.

∙ 12y agoUFO stands for Unidentified Flying Objects. As soon as people began sending things into the air, such as balloons or aircraft there were so many people that didn't know what they were looking at the the phrase was coined and then abbreviated.
