There was some settlement by Spanish and Portuguese, but the first Europeans to form colonies in Guyana where the Dutch, who brought over African slaves. Later the British formed settlements and formed British Guiana in 1831. After the emancipation of the slaves, the British brought over Indian indentured labourers. Guyana became independent in 1966.

Guyana was discovered in 1498 by the Europeans, its history; therefore stretches back a bit more than 500 years!. Guyana's past is punctuated by battles fought and won, possessions lost and regained as the Spanish, French, Dutch and British wrangled for centuries to own this land.
It is still called Guyana. It changed it's name from British Guinea to Guyana when it was made independent in 1966.
