Nazca Lines are located in a barren, inhospitable desert and most of them are so large that it is unlikely to spot them from the ground without knowing they are there. It's therefore not surprising that they weren't discovered until first commercial aircraft started to fly over the region. They were spotted in the 1927 when passengers reported seeing what looked like aircraft runways on the desert surface below.
