No one "discovered" that fact, it was agreed upon by a gathering of planetary scientists. They chose to limit the definition of what a "planet" was. Under the new definition Pluto was excluded.

The rules of a planet are:

  • It orbits the Sun
  • It is large enough for gravity to squash it into a sphere
  • It must have cleared its orbit

This last is the one that Pluto does not comply with. There are many other objects in Pluto's orbital path.
