In 1535, Francisco Pizzaro and Deigo de Amalgro were having a conflict in South America. The bishop of Panama, Fray Tomas Berlanga, took a ship to go from Panama to South America to mediate. However, the ship was blown off course and reached the Galapagos. The tortoises were extremely common, so he and the crew of the ship were the first people to see Galapagos tortoises (there were no natives on the islands).
