Their uncle was Al Shean, a successful vaudeville comedian, part of the team of Gallagher and Shean. Their mother, Minnie, always wanted them to follow in Uncle Al's footsteps. They first performed together as "The Four Nightingales," a singing quartet. Bit by bit, they incorporated comedy. Their first comedy shows were written by their uncle, although the boys always adlibbed many lines.
