The colonials present were drunk, and one of them walked up to a soldier and hit him with a club. The soldier he hit shot him. After that, the other soldiers started firing. Part of the reson may have been that the colonials were taunting the soldiers to "fire!", and the soldiers may have thought that was a command from their officer.
