Think of it this way: The plant gets it's energy from the sun. The zebra (or any other carnivore or omnivore) eats the plant and gains it's nutrients and energy. A lion (or any other carnivore or omnivore) comes along and eats the zebra, gaining it's nutrients and energy and the plants nutrients and energy.
