Depends on whether the wife has a paid job or is staying home. That's fair to say that women having a job have more work as they also do most of the chores at home.

Going to work, paying taxes? there are no set roles in American families, sometimes the dad stays home sometimes the mom...sometimes both parents work and sometimes there are only one parent in the family, etc. so there are no "set" roles of a french family just like there are not "set" roles in an American family.
