Staff Sergeant Archie Van Winkle, USMCR, born in Juneau. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions on 2 November 1950 as a Platoon Sergeant in the Korean War. He had served in WWII as a radio operator-gunner with the Marine Air Wing in the Solomons and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in 1952. He served in Vietnam where he won two Bronze Stars and attained the rank of Colonel before retiring to Ketchikan in 1974. He died there on 22 May 1986. Other personal awards included the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
