Between the Russian and US space programs, just under 500 astronauts and cosmonauts have flown sub-orbital, orbital, and lunar missions in space. Armstrong and Aldrin and 10 other NASA astronauts have walked the surface of the Moon, the last in 1972. Many other countries sent astronauts to the Mir space station and the current International Space Station (ISS), for missions up to 6 months in length. (The single individual record is 437 days aboard Mir in 1995.) The fledgling Chinese space program has launched a total of 6 taikonauts into Earth orbit from 2003 to 2009. In 2004, the private corporation "Scaled Composites" flew two suborbital flights, with 2 solo pilots, to win the Ansari X prize for private spacecraft. (see related link)
