The missions were built between 1769 in San Diego through 1823 in Sonoma
Most missions in the United States were located in California, particularly during the Spanish colonial period. The California mission system, established by Spanish missionaries in the late 18th century, included 21 missions stretching along the coast from San Diego to Sonoma. These missions aimed to spread Christianity among Indigenous populations and facilitate Spanish colonization efforts in the region. Other notable missions were also established in Texas and Florida, but California is the most recognized area for mission locations.
