The colony of New Netherlands was established by the Dutch (Republic of the Seven United Netherlands) in 1614 after some covert exploration between 1609 and 1613. Dutch trader Jan Rodrigues, originally from Santo Domingo, spent the winter of 1613-1614 in the area and Fort Nassau was built later that year.
