The Articles of Confederation were written to provide a form of government for the newly-united 13 colonies. They did not work because they gave the federal government little power and gave the states too much power. The states acted as separate nations, yet still expected the federal government to handle everything. For example: the federal government was expected to pay the army, but had no means to do so.
Madison expected to have a major role in drafting the Constitution. He wanted to carefully preserve the thoughts of the delegates. He was also keenly aware that he was preserving history. His diplomacy and care helped earn him the chance to become the 4th president of the United States.

They expected to change the articles of confederation instead they changed the whole constitution.
James Madison
They had expected changes to the Articles of Confederation not a whole new government.
I'm not sure 'saved' is the best word. The form of government was changed by instituting the Constitution in place of the Articles of Confederation. Under the AoC, the states were more free to govern themselves; under the Constitution, states were now expected to obey certain national laws.
"Don't forget the women." This was spoken to John Adams before he went to the Constitutional Convention. As expected he promptly forgot about the women.
No. Although it is possible to argue that the Convention exceeded its mandate by producing a completely new structure of government rather than merely "revising" the Articles of Confederation, everybody understood that the Articles had serious structural problems which could not be solved and thus expected something more than a mere revision. Beyond that, the Convention had no power whatsoever to force the new system onto several states. It was circulated among them and they could accept it or reject as they chose. Had fewer than nine states ratified then the constitution never would have gone into effect and some other solution to the country's problems would have had to have been found. The Constitution was adopted with the full consent of the several states after many months of open and reasoned debate among the people.

It is equally close to both. If you are expected to round, the usual convention is to round up (to 30) in such cases - although sometimes other rules are used as well.It is equally close to both.
