Henry Hudson discovered the Hudson river, (Originally nammed the Mauritius River after Prince Maurice of Nassau) in 1609 while he was hired by the English Muscovy Company to take a ship (the Hopewell) to find a Northeastern sea passage to the Spice Islands of the South Pacific.
