The first immunoglobulin preparations were developed in the 1950s, but they were administered intramuscularly. Then, in the 1980's the purification process had removed enough impurities to allow for intravenous administration. The first commercial product in the US was introduced in 1981, called Gamimune. The product was sold by Cutter Laboratories, which eventually became part of Bayer before being spun off in the mid-2000s. Eventually it was acquired by another plasma company Grifols.
