As part of the northwest ordinance the first state to be created was Ohio, although the name of the remaining area was changed to Indiana Territory. Also included were one third of Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana.
The first groups of German immigrants settled primarily in New York and Pennsylvania. The arrivals before 1850 were mostly farmers who sought out the most productive land. German Americans established the first kindergartens in the United States.

Wisconsin's first permanent settlement was at Green Bay. It was settled in 1634 by French fur traders and called La Baye.
The Northwest Territory was one of the first territories of the United States. It was incorporated in 1787 by the Northwest Ordinance. It consisted of all of modern-day Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, and parts of Minnesota.
Scandinavians were mostly farmers and because of the cold climate the came from, naturally settled first in upstate New York and then spread to Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota. They also settled in North and South Dakota. They were progressive in their politcs and found a home in the Democratic Party until Lincoln became President in 1861. They were adamantly oppossed to slavery and favored the new Republican Party that was founded in Ripon, Wisconsin in 1856. They also brought their faith, the Lutheran Church, to the Upper Midwest which is still the largest Protestant denomination in these states!

If Wisconsin defeats Michigan on November 20, 2010 it will be the first time that the Badgers have defeated both Michigan and Ohio State in a single season since 1981.
The Native Americans who settled in the land first named it, and the word Minnesota means "Sky-tinted Water" in the Native American language.
In 1830, James Andrew Jackson became the first non-native settler of the town that would become known as Freedom, Wisconsin. He was an African American who traveled there to gain his freedom.
