Rubik designed the rotating cubes as a means to connect mechanical parts, and only realized he could use it as a puzzle when he had moved the cubes out of alignment and tried to get them back to where they were. He added the color design for the 3x3 sides and applied for a Hungarian patent (# HU170062) as the "Magic Cube."
