Domesday Book is organised by the English counties (shires) as they existed in 1085 - 1086. Within each shire the places are organised by the major landholders, who are often senior Churchmen, monasteries, Counts, Earls and senior barons - sometimes even the king himself.

If I were a peasant living of that time, in the same village where I live today, I would look under "Kent", then under the lands of the Archbishop of Canterbury to find my village listed - and I would be one of 20 bordars or 85 villans with 57 ploughs, showing that the land was heavily cultivated and productive.
