The first GSD was a dog named Horan (or Horand) von Grafrath, and was discovered by Capt. Max v Stephanitz in Germany. He wanted to create a working breed that excelled in capability and obedience but was also corageous and had lots of working drive. When he found his perfect dog, Horan, Capt. Stephanitz found suitable females and bred him several times. He also bred Horan to his offspring in order to solidify type. Thus the breed was born.
