While many believe it was the Celts crossing from Britain, there were people in Ireland long before that. It is now reliably believed that the first people came to Ireland by sea from the north of Spain. There is a lot of genetic evidence to support this and people in the west of Ireland in particular bare a resemblance to people in northern Spain. That is not, as many believe, a result of the survivors of the Spanish Armada settling in Ireland.
