Smallpox has no "cure" per se, and the infected person can only be provided some general treatment to help the body fight off the infection. Not so much the cure - but Edward Jenner discovered the preventative measure (vaccination) which was just as good. It is vaccination to prevent smallpox that has saved countless millions of lives over the years, much more so than any method of treating it.
Edward Jenner. He started out by taking pus from lesions on the hand of one person, and injecting it into the hand of another. A little bit icky, and a good way to spread other infections, but given it was the first-ever attempt at practical immunology, the guy is a legend!
