The enzyme that converts RNA to DNA is called reverse transcriptase. This enzyme is commonly found in retroviruses and is utilized in the process of reverse transcription, where RNA is used as a template to synthesize a complementary DNA strand.
MMLV Reverse Transcriptase is a type of enzyme commonly used in molecular biology techniques like reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). It can generate complementary DNA (cDNA) from RNA templates, making it a valuable tool for studying gene expression and RNA viruses. MMLV Reverse Transcriptase is named after the Moloney Murine Leukemia Virus, from which it was originally isolated.

The scientist you are referring to is David Baltimore. He was one of the recipients of the 1975 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discovery of the enzyme reverse transcriptase in viruses. This enzyme plays a crucial role in the replication of retroviruses like HIV.
Reverse transcriptase.
Retroviruses are RNA viruses. Once they infect a living cell, they synthesize a complementary DNA strand (cDNA) of this RNA molecule using the enzyme REVERSE TRANSCRIPTASE (basically RNA dependent DNA polymerase). The enzyme reverse transcriptase is coded by the viral genome itself and not the host's. The infecting virus carries an already synthesized enzyme. The RNA molecule in this RNA-DNA hybrid is then degraded. The DNA molecule then uses the host polymerases (DNA dependent DNA polymerase) and synthesize a daughter DNA strand to form a dsDNA molecule which then intergrates into the host genome.Central dogma follows DNA to RNA. Since these viruses go the other way around they are called as RETROVIRUSES. The well known HIV is an example for retrovirus.

Polymerase and replicase are similar but not the same. Polymerase is a more general term referring to enzymes that synthesize polymers, while replicase specifically refers to enzymes involved in replicating RNA viruses by copying RNA into new RNA strands. replicase is a type of polymerase.
Retroviruses are considered a special class of viruses because they transcribe RNA to DNA using reverse transcriptase. HIV uses reverse transcription to synthesize a DNA strand using its RNA genome as a template.
The RNA viruses that contain reverse transcriptases are collectively called retroviruses among which are: HIV, human immunodeficiency virus (AIDS); RNA tumor viruses (leukemia)
Most RNA viruses carry RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) enzyme, which is responsible for replicating the viral RNA genome within host cells. This enzyme plays a crucial role in the viral life cycle by synthesizing complementary RNA strands from viral RNA templates.
