In September 1929 he bought the first plane. As a marketing strategy (to get people used to planes), on October 6, 1929 (and the following two years) he offered sightseeing tours over Honolulu (3$ for a flight). The pilot then was Captain Sam Elliott.
A few weeks after the first flight he bought two amphibian planes and on November 11, 1929 he started a scheduled air service to connect the islands per plane. The first flight went from Honolulu to Hilo and had a stop on Maui. The next connection was to Kauai and over the next few weeks all the islands received regular air service.
The name of the airline back then was Inter-Island Airways. In 1941 it was renamed to Hawaiian Airlines.
