Mesopotamia was not discovered, it was inhabited by many people for thousands of years. Because humanity originates from the Mediterranean it only makes sense that various nomadic populations would relocate to there. The name Mesopotamia means "between rivers" because it is located between the Tigris and the Euphrates River.
