There are several American Parties so named. The earliest was the American Party of the 1840s made up of members who called themselves "the Know-Nothing Party" because the party members, when asked about the policies of the party, were supposed to say, "I Know Nothing." The current American Party, which practically does not exist anymore, broke from the American Independent Party in the 1970s, the heyday of the party.
