The credit union movement in Ireland was founded in the 1960s by a school teacher Nora Herlighy. Working with her was John Hume who later went on to win the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in the Irish Peace Prize.
Herlighy travelled to the US and observed what the National Credit Union Administration did.
There are several Irish credit union trade associations but the most prominent are the Irish League of Credit Union and the Credit Union Development Association.
There are over 400 credit unions in Ireland today.
