The Maine Central was created through a merger of 2 railroads: the Androscoggin and Kennebec RR and the Penobscot and Kennebec RR both in Maine. The Maine Central inicially went from the western part of Auburn Maine to Bangor circa 1862. The Maine central was purchased in 1980 through a hostile takeover by U.S. Filter Corp owned by Timmy Mellon of the Mellon Bank family.

I think you might be referring to The Flying Yankee. It was a diesel-powered streamliner of Zephyr design built in 1935 for the Maine Central Railroad. It was on display in Maine but is now being restored elsewhere.
