The churches of Christ (Romans 16:16 the churches of Christ salute you) were founded by Jesus Christ ( Matthew 16:18 "upon this rock I will build my church"). The phrase churches of Christ as used in the Bible is a descriptive phrase describing the church as belonging to Christ. The church is his body Ephesians 1:22, 23 and he is the savior of that body Ephesians 5:25. The Churches of Christ are congregational assemblies of New Testament Christians. Their history and background comes out of the 19th century Christian Restoration Movement in the U.S. Alexander Campbell, Barton W. Stone and Thomas Campbell among others were leaders in this movement. Their intent was not to begin a new denomination or church but to restore simple New Testament Christianity. Though Alexander Campbell is often credited by others with founding the Churches of Christ, members of the movement of churches of Christ look to Acts 2 and the day of Pentecost as the beginning and founding of the church.
