He basically funded his expeditions himself, with the help of some friends. It is often but wrongly assumed that he was funded by Queen Elisabeth I. After his expeditions he became a favoured courtier for a while and got a number of titles and functions with income attached to them, but on the one occasion he got money for a ship he never got the money in his hands; Elisabeth 'paid' him by reducing the amount of money she said he still owed her.
