Originally the binomial for giraffe was Cervus camelopardus, from the classical idea that the giraffe was a hybrid of the camel and the leopard. It was named by Linnaeus in 1758. Later, Morten Thrane Brünnich, in 1775, renamed the genus to Giraffa. In 1827, a giraffe was taken to France, alighting at Marseille and walking the 900 km to Paris. People lined the streets to see her, as she was accompanied by the naturalist Geoffroy Saint Hilaire, to meet Charles X.
