Union General Catharinus Putnam Buckingham graduated from West Point in 1829. Among the graduating class of 46 cadets, Buckingham was ranked sixth. He served in Washington DC during the war. As an aside, he was in the same graduating class of Robert E. Lee.

Ulysses S. Grant
Union General Ormsby MacKnight Mitchel graduated from West Point in 1829. Forty-six cadets graduated that year and Mitchel ranked 15th among his class which included Robert E. Lee. Mitchel served in the Western Theater but his life was cut short by yellow fever in 1862.

Holmes had a chance in the US Civil War to help save Vicksburg from being captured but his offensive into Arkansas failed.
