Adolf Hitler
Schutzstaffel (Protection Unit)
No, Hitler had thousands of bodyguards. Hitler's original bodyguards were the SA (Sturmabteilung), but it soon became apparent to him that he did not have their total loyalty and posed a danger to him and so he created a personal bodyguard called the Stoßtrupp (shock troop).Following Hitler's failed coup attempt in 1923, the Stoßtrupp was disbanded but reformed in 1925 as the Schutzkommando and eventually became known as the Schutzstaffel (SS). The SS soon grew to incorporate over 50,000 men and a decision was made to select the best men to form a new protection unit. 117 men were picked to form the SS-Stabswache Berlin. Two traing units for further bodyguards were then also created: Sonderkommando Zossen and SS-Sonderkommando Jüterbog. In November 1933, on the 10th anniversary of the Beer Hall Putsch, the Sonderkommandos were ammalgamated and renamed Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler (LSSAH or LAH).By the end of the war the LSSAH had grown from a regiment into a full-blown panzer division.Another set of Hitler's bodyguards were the Reichssiherheitsdienst (RSD), (originally Führerschutzkommando), which were set up on the personal orders of Hermann Göring.
The military unit called the Praetorian Guard was stationed in Rome to protect the emperor. Addtionally Augustus Caesar established a personal guard unit called the German Guard.

The abbreviation "SS"S.S. in front of the name of a ship stands for Steamship.SS is often used in the US as an abbreviation for social security.SS in the context of the Holocaust and World War 2 stands for Schutzstaffel which, translated literally, means Protective Squad. (Orginally, it provided bodyguards for leading Nazis). As the literal translation conveys just about nothing to people who don't already know what it was, it is common to refer to it in English simply as the SS. It was the SS that was in charge of the Holocaust. The Nazis regarded the SS as an elite unit, the Party's "praetorian guard", with all SS personnel selected (in principle, anyway) on the principles of racial purity and unconditional loyalty to Führer and the Nazi Party. The SS military branch, the Waffen-SS, evolved into a second German army in addition to the regular German army, the Wehrmacht.
