Usually castles in Wales were built by Edward I, Hammer of the Scots (and Welsh, and French, and anyone else that took his fancy). However, this particular castle was built by Gilbert "the Red" de Clare. It was built as the result of an ongoing feud between the Norman de Clares and the Welsh Llywelyn, usually called Ein Llyw Olaf (Our Last Prince).
