Jesse Hawley had the idea to build the Erie Canal. He went broke with his flour mill in Rochester because he could not get his product to the market fast enough. He wrote to the governor of New York. DeWitt Clinton liked the idea and pushed New York legislators for funding.
Governor Dewitt Clinton was the man who pushed the idea of the Erie Canal. Joshua Forman was the first to come up with the plan. Thomas Eddy and Jonas Platt pushed the project in the New York Legislature.

The Erie and Ohio Canal also reached the Ohio River. Neither of these canals were as successful as the Erie Canal.
