More than 1 million citizens lined the streets of Manhattan for the funeral procession of President Ulysses S. Grant. In a column that stretched for 7 miles, and took 5 hours to pass, 60,000 mourners marched from City Hall to Riverside Park.
In actual attendance numbers, the top five funerals in order are:
* C. N. Annadurai, Chief Minister of the state of Madras in India. An estimated 15 million people attended his funeral in 1969. Still stands as a record in The Guinness Book of World Records.
* Ayatollah Khomeini, ruler of Iran. An estimated 12 million went to his funeral in 1989.
* Umm Kulthum, Egyptian singer. More than 4 million people attended her funeral in 1975.
* Pope John Paul II (Karol Jozef Wojtyla). Attendance at John Paul's funeral is estimated from 2 to 4 million people.
* Princess Diana, mother of Prince William and Prince Harry of England. Diana's funeral was attended by multitudes of other celebrities, and around 250,000 mourners gathered in Hyde Park, and over a million people lined the four mile route from Kensington Palace to Westminster Abbey. Around 2.5 billion watched the funeral on TV.
