They both used the feudal system. The feudal system is a kind of culture in which the knights (in Japan, Samurai) owned most of the land and were responsible to the King (in Japan, Emperor), and basically ruled over the peasants.
The language barrier is usually the most difficult aspect.
from what i know most were ninjas, and the two groups would be Iga and Koga clans
Japan
There were many different beliefs in Feudal Japan. Most were Zen Buddhists, but other types of Buddhism existed, depending on which class of society one belonged to. Also all of Japan also have Shinto beliefs, especially the Imperial Household. There were also few Christians that existed in Feudal Japan, though it would be banned toward the end of Feudal Society.
Geisha came to be around the year 1750, so they would have not been present for most of the stretch of feudal Japan. Only the last bit of it. They worked in areas much the same as today. Popularized in large cities. They worked in tea houses, and play houses.

In the feudal system the most powerful person was the monarch. The most important person in the everyday life of the peasants would probably have been the reeve, who supervised their daily work and reported to the manor lord.
