Many people believed that the conscription of 1944, in WWII, was necessary, but others begged to differ. The English-Canadians were in the geneal conclusion that overseas conscription would greatly help win the war. The majority of French-Canadians agreed that conscription could be necessary, but not overseas - only within the borders of Canada. They argued that men were needed on the farms in Quebec. But what of the farms outside of Quebec? The English were willing to sacrifice their men almost without a thought. Prime Minister King had already been giving conscription for quite some time, even asking the public their opinion and having a vote on it. He decided to conscript men, posting them in Canada. These men ended up being called zombies because of their unwillingness for the post. But King could wait no longer, and buckled under the pessures of other countries and the English-Canadians near the end of the war. He sent a small amount of troops overseas to England, many of whom did not end up fighting. Though this was against the wishes of theEnglish-Canadians, they were not too vexed with King, only glad that he was able to put the conscription for the time that he did.
