Ocean cruising is relatively easy for manual wheelchair users, all bar the smallest ships have acceptable facilities and helpful staff. You might need to negotiate accessible excursions, but it can be done (for example, in Juneau, Alaska, they have a wheelchair friendly coach and boat for a fantastic whale watching trip.

Scenic have semi-accessible river cruise boats, but no guarantee of getting on/off at stops. Ama claim they will have one accessible cabin on one boat next year.

Whilst some trains have wheelchair spaces, I've not yet found any train tour that is wheelchair friendly. Orient Express is particularly dismissive.

It amazes me that it is still so hard for active wheelchair users to get a decent, normal, touring holiday, without spending a fortune or putting the whole thing together themselves. The companies involved seem to have no real intention of even trying to change it. Daft really, as young, fit, active wheelchair users are a growing market who tend to show huge loyalty to companies who do make an effort.

What is the best cruise ship for an Alaskan cruise?

It really depends on what you want to do. If you're looking for three days up and three days back, ANY of the premium Cruise lines can do this well. If you really want to see Alaska, you want to look into what are called "cruise tours". As the name implies, it's a cruise combined with a land based vacation. Of the Cruise Tour Operators, Princess stands out for many reasons, not the least of which would be their "glass topped train" picks you up at the ship, you are not taken by bus to meet the train. They are also the owners/operators of "purpose built" lodges specifically designed to enhance your exploration and view of Alaska. You will find them strategically located throughout National parks and forests. This year, at the Kenai Lodge they introduced "fly fishing" (for salmon) as an activity. You won't be bored. One little note, if you take the northbound cruise, your cash savings will cover three days on land. Most people take the southbound cruise because they would rather do the land tour first and then be pampered on the cruise ship, rather than doing the cruise first.
