The truth is, there are probably many, many actors, activist and celebrities that are knowingly living with and treating the HIV virus. Unfortunately, the stigma that is STILL attached to this illness would make anyone uneasy about revealing their positive status. Honestly a person has a right to keep that kind of information private as long as there is no harm or physical danger to anyone else. To be open about and HIV diagnosis, especially to millions of people, takes remarkable courage and willingness to be criticized. There are still tons of uneducated or just downright nasty people who use their own agenda be it personal, political or religious to look at AIDS/HIV as punishment for people who have lived less that unsavory lives in their opinion. It has been called a "gay" disease, a "black" disease, a "San Francisco Specific" disease, a "sinners" disease when truly it is a VIRUS that has infected HUMAN BEINGS everywhere. Maybe instead of speculating which troubled star may be sick from this plague, we can reopen the lines of communication about HIV. We can pick up where we left off in the mid 90s and get back to alleviating the fear of people with this illness so that no one has to feel ashamed to say "I'm a celebrity/ activist/ singer/ teacher/ banker/ waiter/ athelete/ person living with HIV." Maybe then once people stop being judged they may truly have the hope inside to be themselves openly, freely and happily, surviving with our support.
