Paramedic is a job title that is usually misrepresented, every person on an ambulance is not a paramedic, there is also EMT-Basic (most common, trained in First aid, CPR/AED use, history taking, recognizing life threatening conditions, and in some areas they are trained to administer basic meds) after EMT-basic there are different levels between to get to EMT-Paramedic based on your state. Paramedic is a Continued Education Job - usually 2+ years of college based off state. Paramedics are trained on IV's, Cardiac and other drug administration, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Trauma Life Support (ITLS or BTLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Recognizing and identifying Life threatening conditions and conditions that may progress to become life threatening, EKG Recognition, Human Systems, Chest Decompressions (for when you have a collapsed lung), and many other things based off of where you live. Paramedics do not make large amounts of money, it is a calling not as much a job that you do for the money. You would work long hours and expect to NOT get off at your scheduled time. Also you have to be able to handle very stressful situations.
