The united states supreme court has the jurisdiction to settle disputes between states in the union. This might involve clarifying borders or use of river water, among other issues.
The Green Mountain Boys were a militia organization first established in the 1760s in the territory between the British provinces of New York and New Hampshire, known as the New Hampshire Grants (which later became the state of Vermont). Headed by Ethan Allen and members of his extended family, they were instrumental in resisting New York's attempts to control the territory, over which it had won de jure control in a territorial dispute with New Hampshire
As best as I can tell, the Supreme Court, which is a federal court, settles disputes between neighboring states.

The New England colonies were Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. what is now Maine was part of Massachusetts and the land that is now Vermont was in dispute, claimed by New York, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts.
