everyone serves jury duty if you register to vote that is also signing you up for jury duty but you can only be called upon once a year and you do get paid for jury duty but it isn't much so the only way to not get jury duty is to not register to vote

If sent a notice, the law requires you to report in. There are some limited number of reasons that will have the court excuse you. Reasons of health, or perhaps suffering an undue financial hardship. Such may get you out of jury duty in general, as opposed to simply knowing the defendent, which would get you out of a specific case.
