During the antebellum era in Georgia, the two dominant political parties were the Democrats and the Whigs. The Democrats, led by politicians such as William H. Crawford and George M. Troup, were mostly supported by wealthy plantation owners and advocated for states' rights and the preservation of slavery. The Whigs, led by figures like Joseph E. Brown and George W. Crawford, represented a more diverse coalition of smaller farmers, urban merchants, and industrialists, and were generally more supportive of the federal government and economic development.

There have been four presidential assassins. Booth, the man who killed Lincoln was still fighting the Civil War against the North. He was surely not a Republican and if he voted, he would have voted against Lincoln. The Democrats were split over slavery but those who supported slavery were mostly Democrats, so he may have considered himself a democrat. The three other assassins were clearly not democrats.

This recent election had a turnout of mostly republican seats, with a lesser amount of democrats than last year, which wasn't a surprise since most voters have been unhappy, feeling that the democrats have been doing nothing for this country.
