A Brahman has lesser but stringent duties to perform, which seems to place him seated on a higher order. For example, a non-Brahmin may tell the truth amidst his other activities; a Brahmin has the duty to tell the truth irrespective of his other activities if he has any.
Caste System is to categorize people to do their respective duties and not to put them in sublime groups.
A Vysya doing his business sincerely is definitely on a better order than a Brahman not performing his daily rites.
