Egypt has been a republic since a group of Army officers led by Colonel Gamel Abdel Nasser overthrew King Farouk in 1952.
The Free officers Movement started in 1945. It was a clandestine group comprising of nationalistic junior officers in Egypt's armed forces. This group finally instigated the 1952 Egyptian Revolution and establishment of Republic of Egypt.
The Egyptian Revolution happened in the year 1952. This began on July 23, 1952, initially aimed to overthrow King Farouk. It resulted in the end of rule of the Muhammad Ali Dynasty, the establishment of the Republic of Egypt, end of British occupation of Egypt, beginning of the Nasser era and the Revolutionary wave across the Arab world.
