During the Spanish-American War, the Americans helped the Philippines get free from Spain. In 1956, America gave the Philippines their independence.
San Martin fought for Peru, Chile, and Argentina to gain independence from Spain. He had trained in Spain but decided to join those fighting for independence in Argentina where he was born.
