American Indians controlled the land west of the Appalachians.
Colonists lived east of the Appalachians because this is the only land England owned at the time. However, after England won the 7 Years' War, they acquired the land west of the Appalachians, so colonists began migrating there. But, there were tensions between the Natives and the colonists so England had to come up with a solution. King George III created the Proclamation of 1763, which stated that the colonists stay east of the Appalachians and the Indians west. Yet, this was no solution. The colonists were angered because they had just went to war for this region and now they can't even settle there. And even worse, the colonists had been paying taxes to fund this war, basically paying for the region that they are forbidden to live in.
the rebellion showed the british government that defending western lands would be costly. therefore it issued the proclamation of 1763. this order forbade colonists to settle west of the Appalachians. the colonists were furious.
During the peace negotiations, the British ceded the land West of the Alleghenies and Appalachians to the US.
