.It is really not possible to credit the stopping of apartheid in South Africa to any one individual, although the iconic first black president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela played a leading role. The African National Congress, and the Pan African Congress progressively applied pressure both locally and internationally, from the 1960s, including an armed struggle to force the change. Economic sanctions were progressively applied internationally. All of these factors ultimately resulted in the government of the day capitulating. Nelson Mandela was freed from prison by the then President F.W. De Klerk, and the African National Congress was unbanned.
Both Nelson Mandela and F.W de Klerk were awarded the Nobel peace prize

The dismantling of the apartheid system was achieved through the joint efforts of Nelson Mandela and the white South African President F.W. De Klerk. De Klerk was a liberal statesman who gradually introduced policies that oversaw the ending of all racist laws, the abolishing of colour segregation and the raising of the black majority population to have the same equal status under the law as whites, culminating in them being given universal suffrage. In all of this he worked closely with Mandela, who advised and counselled him on the best way of achieveing their joint aim without taking any action that might prove too provocative to one side or the other, and risk tipping the nation into further violence.
The end result was the famous South African General Election of 1994, which saw the ruling National Party swept from office and Mandela elected the new President as head of an ANC Government. He and De Klerk were later jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, although many black South Africans resented De Klerk being allowed a share in it.
