There is currently no recognized world record for the 800m Butterfly. A Postal Swim Meet is being run by Warrenton Masters and Sanctioned by United States Masters Swimming that includes the 800m Butterfly. Records are being kept. Swimmers can complete their swims at swim meets (during freestyle events) or on their own with a witness and submit times.
Wilson Kipketer of Denmark holds seven of the ten fastest 800m times in history, including his world record of 1.41.11 from 1997.
The 800m is the metric equivalent of the half mile. The world record is 1:41.01 held by David Rudisha of Kenya.
As of the 2008 Games, that would be 1:42.58 held by Vebjorn Rodal of Norway and set at the 1996 Games in Atlanta.
